  • Data Privacy Day 2024: Safeguarding Your Data

In today's data-driven landscape, the significance of Data Privacy Day cannot be overstated. With an exponential increase in data generation and the constant evolution of technology, safeguarding sensitive information has become a critical concern, especially in the fintech sector, which handles a treasure trove of confidential and sensitive data. Consequently, confidentiality and security are paramount, and robust measures for protecting consumers' privacy are essential. Data privacy is concerned with how personal information is handled, processed, and shared, with a particular focus on respecting the rights of individuals to control their own data. This blog post will highlight some of the best practices for service providers and consumer to enhance their data privacy protection measures and take control of their data, in acknowledgement of Data Privacy Day. For Service Providers Safeguarding Customer Data: Encryption is Key: The first step is to use robust encryption protocols to keep data secure during both transmission and storage. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Additionally, multi-factor authentication, incorporating passwords and biometrics, provides an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access. Regular Security Audits: Conducting regular security audits can help identify and address potential vulnerabilities, critical for staying ahead of potential threats. Compliance with Regulations: Staying up-to-date with data protection regulations, such as GDPR, CCPA, and other relevant regional laws, not only ensures legal compliance but also fosters customer trust. By implementing these measures, fintech companies can assure customers that their data is safe and secure. Data privacy is a shared responsibility, and consumers should be empowered with knowledge and tools to protect their information. For Individuals Using Data-Savvy Products: Understand Privacy Settings: Familiarize yourself with the privacy settings of the products or services you use, and adjust them according to your comfort level to control what information is shared. Regularly Update Passwords: Routinely updating passwords and avoiding easily guessable combinations provide an added layer of defense against unauthorized access. Review Permissions: Regularly reviewing and assessing the permissions granted to applications and limiting access to only essential information and features is another way to protect personal data. Stay Informed: Staying informed about the latest privacy threats and best practices is a powerful tool for protecting yourself from evolving cyber threats. Moreover, we would like to encourage sharing this data privacy awareness with others, helping them understand how to keep their information safe. As we approach Data Privacy Day on January 28, 2024, by applying these practices, let's collectively embrace the theme of "Take Control of Your Data." Awareness and responsibility are fundamental in shaping a future where privacy is not just an ideal but a fundamental right, and we all hold the key to contributing to a safer and more secure digital landscape for everyone. • January 24 is 6th International Education Day with the theme of "Learning for Lasting Peace"

Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development. History of International Education Day: The roots of International Education Day can be traced back to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which emphasizes the importance of inclusive and equitable quality education for all. On December 3, 2018, the UN General Assembly proclaimed January 24th as International Day of Education to celebrate the role of education in promoting peace, sustainability, and global citizenship. Mission of International Education Day: The mission of International Education Day is multifaceted. It aims to raise awareness about the significant role education plays in fostering peace and development. Moreover, the day serves as a reminder of the global community's commitment to providing accessible, quality education to all, regardless of geographical or socio-economic barriers. Implementing the Mission: The Role of Online Learning: In our ever-connected world, online education has emerged as a powerful tool to address the challenges highlighted by International Education Day. The opposite side of the road, in this case, involves leveraging digital platforms to make education accessible to a diverse range of learners. Global Accessibility: Online learning breaks down geographical barriers, allowing students from different corners of the world to access high-quality education. This aligns seamlessly with International Education Day's mission of inclusivity and equity. Diverse Learning Opportunities: The online education platform expands the range of available courses, ensuring that learners have access to a diverse array of subjects and perspectives. This fosters a holistic and well-rounded education, contributing to the overarching goals of International Education Day. Flexibility and Inclusivity: Online learning provides flexibility, accommodating the varied needs of learners. Whether it's individuals with full-time jobs, parents, or those in remote areas, the flexibility of online education ensures that education is not a privilege but a right for everyone. As we celebrate International Education Day on January 24th, let us recognize the strides we've made and the work that still lies ahead. By embracing the power of online learning, we contribute to the vision of a world where education is a beacon of hope, breaking down barriers and building bridges towards a brighter future for all. Navigating the Opposite Side of the Road Navigating the other side of the road on International Education Day represents accepting non-traditional teaching methods and conquering challenges. It promotes a varied and inclusive learning environment by pushing us to think outside of boxy ideas. This approach's recognition and celebration of the richness that cultural variety adds to the educational process is one of its main features. We wholeheartedly support the spirit of International Education Day with our online learning platform, Money Management Academy (MMA), and Digital Financial Literacy Programs. Our provision of inclusive and easily available online learning options helps to dismantle barriers and guarantee that education reaches every part of the world. We are aware that education can be a very effective means of empowering people, and we fully support the UN's objectives in this regard. Let's reaffirm our commitment to education as a force for good as we observe International Education Day. Let's keep working together, coming up with new ideas, and navigating the other side of the street to make sure that everyone, regardless of circumstances, has access to high-quality education. • Constructive Dialogue at the Zanaco House

Had the privilege of engaging in a constructive dialogue at the Zanaco House, Lusaka, with the leadership of Zambia National Commercial Bank (Zanaco) PLC. Dr Jonathan Pinifolo (COO, COMESA Business Council), Mr. Yoseph Wondimu (CIO), Nyi Nyein Aye (CEO, ThitsaWorks), and Rob Reeve (CEO, LexTego) were all present, sharing pivotal updates on the Proof of Concept (PoC) for the COMESA Digital Retail Payments Scheme between Malawi 🇲🇼 and Zambia 🇿🇲. Kudos to Mr. Mathews T. Tembo, Zanaco's Chief Digital Banking Officer, Mr. Baruch Chambakata, Head of Digital Sales, and the entire Zanaco Team for the invaluable insights. Our shared vision is clear - improving cross-border trade in the COMESA region. Background: COMESA, representing 21 Eastern & Southern African nations, is on a mission to bolster economic integration and development. A significant roadblock has been the inefficiency of cross-border retail payments. SMEs suffer, traders are hindered, and trust wanes due to potential data breaches. To address this, the COMESA Business Council is spearheading a robust retail payment platform tailored for COMESA Member States. With the ongoing POC, with support from the Mojaloop Foundation, we're determining the potential of a secure, fast, and cost-effective retail payment platform for cross-border transactions. Our goal is not just to devise a payment system but to sculpt an infrastructure that champions financial inclusion, and regional growth. 🚀 Stay tuned as we, alongside stakeholders from Malawi and Zambia, embark on this transformative journey towards enhancing retail payment platforms within COMESA.
